Empty Spreads

Russian | Italian

NIL
also known as Ø
also known as Empty Spreads

What does NIL mean ?

NIL means

  • a spread contains no slices at all (no data at all..).

NIL doesn't mean

  • a spread with one slice containing the value "0.0000"
  • a spread of strings with one slice containing zero characters

Usually objects are implemented in a way, so that if any of the inputs contains an empty spread, the output also evaluates to an empty spread. Render objects with empty spreads on any input are not drawn.

Empty spreads are displayed in the tool tip with the special symbol Ø.

The same thing is meant if somebody in the vvvvorums mentions "NIL"

HowTo avoid NIL

In most cases you will want avoid a Ø because it may puzzle the whole graph below.
see

HowTo create NIL

Sometimes you may need to input a Ø somewhere. it can be created with a little trick using

see

or simply use the following modules:

unlike any other values, spreads, strings or colors a Ø on a node's inlet will NOT be saved within the patch.
So if you want to set any input to Ø permanently let that Select-node connected. Otherwise your inlet will have the default value (string, color) the next time you open your patch.
