Partitura-Ligeti is a collaboration between Abstract Birds + Quayola in the form of a live audiovisual
concert and installation based on Ligeti’s sonata for viola solo, performed by Odile Auboin of
Ensemble intercontemporain, Paris.
Inspired by the studies of artists such as Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Fischinger and Norman McLaren,
Partitura-Ligeti is inherently connected to music, generating and defining its own coherent visual language .
Through the use of bespoke software, the sound of the viola is analysed and transformed into dynamic graphic scores.
The six Ligeti pieces materialise into linear structures, translating the music and its complexities into abstract
geometries and forms.
Ligeti had a far reaching influential palate from Renaissance to African music, literature, painting, architecture,
science and mathematics, especially the fractal geometry of Benoît Mandelbrot and the writings of Douglas Hofstadter.
The Sonata for Viola Solo, has been described as “perhaps the greatest paean yet written to a single string,
in this case, the viola’s lowest string, “C” its most sensual asset.
Commissioned by Arcadi for Nemo Festival, in collaboration with Ensemble Intercontemporain.

We realized a different kind of project for the exclusive vegetarian restaurant Tian located in the center of Vienna. In the entrance area a custom made light- and videoinstallation decorates the room, which can be controlled conveniently with a web application.

In the chandalier made out of wood and dried flowers by renowed florists Schlichtbarock out of Feldbach, Carynthia, we installed moving-lights. Additionally we created a video mapping and projection installation to complete the look that's welcoming entering customers.

To realize this project our little workshop at the office came in handy. We had to try out quite a lot of hardware solutions to find the smallest, most efficient parts that created the biggest effect. The most important thing was to adapt the existing chandalier in a very subtle way. The biggest challanges were to handle the heat development, the additional weight and the wiring.

Together with Tian's house technicians we managed to have all the technical equipment be hidden, so that visitors cannot realize where the light and projection is coming from.

When a newspaper and its website get a relaunch, a big show to present the new design is imminent. Thankfully the Kurier chose the MAK, the museum for applied arts in Vienna, as their location. With it's subtle white-cube look we were able to draw all the attention to the presentation. We worked together with their in-house marketing department to develop the right kind of presentation-tools. We came to the conclusion that using a big stage element in the aspect ration of the newspaper aswell of a standard 4:3 browser window will draw the attention to the content. The Stage element itself was embedded into a 60-meter wide 270° multi-screen projection.

In the beginning of the event we wanted to work with an understatement. We only projected the stage-element with a live RSS-feed newsticker and used lights to cover the walls of the hall.

As soon as the show started we then extended the projection content to all surrounding walls, kicking off the event with a wow factor. The backdrop was built out of real-time 3D letters floating in space, representing the essential elements of news.

The newspaper was simulated in a dynamic way, allowing the audience to watch the presenter browse through the pages. Certain elements that the presenter wanted to highlight moved out of the newspaper onto the wall next to the stage element.

The website presentation was fully animated and also used the surrounding walls to emphasize special features that are new to the Kurier.at. Also the walls next to the stage element were a perfect place to show additional and supporting content to the speeches.

After the 30 minute presentation we brought the 3D letters to life and created an upbeat audio-reactive visuals system that accompanied the audience until the end of the night.

A festive gala event on November 8th was the setting for the award ceremony hosted by the austrian technology blog futurezone. We have been commissioned to create an futuristic presentation system to showcase products and innovations. The room in the MAK, a museum for applied arts in Vienna was the perfect setting to be transformed into a cyberspace. Three big white walls that encompass the room were the perfect projection surface to immerse the guests into a virtual world.

Inspired by the design of the award sculpture, we used the circuit-board aesthetics as our main design element. We created a world populated with energy conducting strip, electronic circuits and flashes of energy that were zooming along the conductive lines. All nominees and winners were embedded into this electronic landscape and during the evening we travelled vertically through this landscape creating the impression of traveling in elevator. The whole room was moving through 56 floors and each movement was enhanced acoustically to create an immersive experience.

To achieve this we used six video projectors, two for each wall. Regardless of the difference between the aspect rations of the projections and the walls we used precise positioning of the projectors and a little mapping to create a seamless image throughout the room. Our vvvv real-time system allowed us to fine-tune the viewing angles so that all lines bent correctly around the corners of the room. All projections were controlled by two computers running vvvv.

M BOX INTERACTIVE MEDIA WALL 2012

//INFO
The m wall system is a permanently installed interactive media wall, consisting of 20 Full HD displays and a dedicated client-server system (11 computers). On the one side, a powerful in-house development tool for interactive installations, it can also be used to simulate and playback large format video content.

The system offers endless possibilities in the fields of generative and reactive content creation. External live feeds such as twitter, video streams and picture content from the web can be embedded into the content. The m wall system can be controlled through various interfaces, such as, e.g. iPads, Kinect Motion Control, or classic show control systems.

A broad array of reactive, interactive, generative and linear modules have been developed for the m wall. These can be used for various applications, such as, e.g. 360 degrees projections or projection mappings, but also picture adjustments for large format video playback. The m wall system is based on the VVVV software extended by the performance Framework IRIS.

For the presentation of the upcoming program line-up of Austria’s biggest privately owned TV station, Viennese event agency Büro Hirzberger hired us to install an interactive visual system to decorate the gala event that took place in the MAK, a museum for applied arts.

The most important part of the evening was the screening of a double-HD video presentation with the TV-highlights of 2013. For the rest of the evening we developed a very flexible live visual system that was constantly playing with the architectural features of the room. The event location is situated in a museum and is normally used for exhibitions. This minimalistic white-cube with it’s three white walls is ideal to create an expansive projection experience.

To achieve this we used six video projectors, two for each wall. Regardless of the difference between the aspect ratios of the projections and the walls we created a seamless image throughout the room using precisely positioned projectors and mapping techniques. Our vvvv real-time system allowed us to fine-tune all optical effects so that the ventilation ducts seemed to be the source of the waves or logos. All projections were controlled by two computers running vvvv.

Additionally to the animated design we translated the visual style to the graphics on the bar tables, out-door banners and accreditation desks as well.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Decelerator Helmet offers a experimental approach to an essential subject of our globalized world. The technical reproducible senses are consigned to an apparatus which allows the user a perception of the world in slow motion. The float of time as apparently invariant constant is broken and subjected under the users control.
In the inside of the helmet the Video-signal of a camera is processed by a small computer. The slowed down images are displayed right before the users eyes via a Head-Mounted Display and simultaneously shown at a monitor on the outside. In three different modes the lapse of time can be influenced through a remote control.
